Hello everyone!

Today I have a little family news. No, it’s not another baby–I know you were thinking that.

We are moving to San Antonio! We are hoping to be there before March. We’re super busy packing for a move a month away (plus the usual kid stuff) so questions, comments, or just general excitement is best expressed through text. At least I usually answer in writing, haha.

This means we have a thrilling 20 hour car trip with 2 small kids and 4 cats in the near future. Super exciting (read: exhausting).

Exfoliating Herbal Scrub

This is really more of a how to, DIY home recipe for a luxurious herbal face and body scrub, but I don’t want it confused with food.

Well, January is feeling great, we’re a week in and I hope most of us are still going strong on those new goals. One surefire way to continue to feel good is to treat yourself right.

As most of you have probably figured out, I don’t generally approve of sugar as a food additive, but there is one thing that it is GREAT for–skincare. Sugar is an incredible exfoliant! Well, and it’s food for attracting ants, so that’s two things. I digress.

If you want to use salt instead, that’s fine, but salts are a bit abrasive, especially on the face, so you might want to powder it in a mortar and pestle first (if you happen to have one lying around). I used salt because we don’t usually keep sugar in the house. My absolute favorite version of this was made with brown sugar as a base. It was wonderful! I would put it on about 5 minutes before getting in the shower and then let it crystallize on my face. I also don’t usually take the time to powder my herbs all the way, because I don’t mind it a little rough and chunky.

1 mason jar

2 cups sugar, brown sugar, or salt (please powder it first) as a base substance

1/2 cup herbs (I bought this herbal kit to get myself back in the swing of things)

Steps: 

  1. If you’re using salt as a base substance, grind in a mortar and pestle until a fine powder. Add salt or sugar to mason jar.
  2. Select your herbs. I have chosen mine based on skincare and anti-inflammatory properties.
  3. One at a time, grind each herb in your mortar and pestle (or you can blend them in a blending apparatus for a few seconds).
  4. Add ground herbs to mason jar.
  5. Shake until combined.

That’s it! I love making this stuff, and I enjoy giving it as gifts too.

It’s officially 2018, hurrah! I think everyone loves new beginnings. It’s exciting to anticipate change and rejuvenation, and the new year always does that for me.

So talk of a new beginning always leads to a predictable topic: resolutions. I suppose I’m going to lay mine out there for the sake of accountability.

Most people give up on their new year’s resolutions pretty fast. Oh well. That’s why I’m not calling these resolutions–it’s more like refocusing my efforts in specific areas: health, the kids, and the family.

In terms of health I am beginning a Hashimoto’s thyroiditis healing protocol this month, starting with a 2 week liver detoxification, followed by adrenal support and then gut repair. It will certainly be interesting! I want to regain some more energy (although the synthroid is already helping tons) and try to repair my body. I know that healing hypothyroidism isn’t common, and remission is a lofty goal, but I’m a lofty-minded girl. I’m comfortable shooting for the stars. I’d like to lose some more weight, and I’ve been doing well so far, but losing weight isn’t the priority–health is.

With the girls I want to be more hands-on than I am. It’s difficult for me to focus on being an interactive mom when other people besides the kids are in the house, and too easy for me to turn the TV on and let them listen to nursery rhyme songs repeatedly (and they love it). It’s not bad in moderation, but imaginative play is important. Reading is important. Running around outside and getting dirty, and falling and getting scratched up and all of that stuff is really important, too. Arts, crafts, and music are important. I want to really find my groove with them. Part of me thinks that this isn’t going to happen until we move and that’s okay.

And with the family as a whole, and just in general, I want to improve. Such a broad statement, but it’s true. We want to relocate. I can wash dishes and sweep floors and mop more frequently. I can vacuum and pick up toys more. I can get kids to help me with clean up! I want to focus on writing and my online stores a lot more than I have. A lot of this stuff is energy based, and I’ve gained a lot of energy and motivation back since starting my thyroid medication so it’s all good.

After Christmas I bought myself a small gift. Well, three, actually–three small notebooks labeled goals, fitness, and projects. Fitness is primarily for meal planning, because if I don’t have a dedicated place to write down my meal prep I won’t do it (and I desperately need to do it). Projects is intended for organizing my plans with the kids–small “lessons,” crafts and activities, anything kid related is going in there. Goals was intended to be just a generic planner where I could write out what needs to get done when, but I think it’s going to be more than that–something greater! There are pages dedicated to goal setting and executing them, and I’m going to use them.
